Procedure: Male Breast Reduction - Gynecomastia Reduction

Gynecomastia is characterized as the enlargement or overdevelopment of male breasts. This results from excess fat deposits, glandular tissue or skin in the breast area and may be the result of heredity, hormone changes, some illnesses, and certain prescription medications. It can also be the result of excess alcohol consumption, smoking, or use of anabolic steroids. The goal of the male breast reduction surgery is to reduce the level of excess fat and tissue and restore a more masculine appearance.

A good candidate is:

  • A non-smoker
  • Generally healthy individual
  • Overall physical growth is complete

Procedure description:

Depending on the extent of the condition, gynecomastia in some cases can be treated with liposuction to remove the excess fatty tissue. If there is excess glandular tissue and or skin, excision of the tissue may be required. In most cases the incisions are made in the natural contours of the breast and the excess tissue is removed. With excision of the glandular tissue, in some cases liposuction may also be required to remove fatty tissue.

This surgery can often be performed in the doctor's office on an outpatient basis. For additional information about the procedure, answers to any questions you might have or to discuss your particular condition, please contact Dr. Shenko to set up a consultation!

Following surgery your chest will be wrapped to protect the incision areas and support the chest. You may have a small tube in place to drain any excess blood. At first you may experience swelling and discomfort. This can be managed with medication. You may need to wear the bandage for a few days or weeks.

As soon as you feel ready, usually within a few days, you will be able to return to light activity. You should be able to return to work and more normal activities around the time your sutures are removed. In all cases closely follow Dr. Shenko's recommendations as part of your recovery process.
