Mastopexy, the Breast Lift
Introduction
Breast size and shape are very important to many women. Unfortunately, genetics, pregnancy, breast-feeding, and weight loss can all play a part in the size, shape and volume of our breasts. Some people feel that small or sagging breasts contribute to a distorted body image or low self-esteem and wish to change the shape of their breasts in order to achieve better balance and symmetry, thus improving self-confidence.
A breast lift restores sagging breasts without necessarily changing the cup size of the breasts. A breast augmentation may be done at the same time as the lift if larger breasts are also desired.
Good Candidates for a Breast Lift
- A non-smoker
- Generally healthy with a stable weight
- Female
- span style=”font-size: 16px;”>At least 6 months post-partum
- Has flattened, saggy breasts with the nipple hanging lower than the base of the breast crease
Procedure Description
A mastopexy is a surgical procedure to improve the shape and position of the breasts or improve symmetry of the breasts, by removing excess skin and tightening the remaining portion. Areolas may also be reduced at this time. This is an outpatient surgery that takes place in a hospital setting under general anesthesia and takes about 3 hours. The incision line is circular around the areola, down the front of the breast, and sometimes horizontally across the base of the breast.
Recovery
Most patients take about 1 week off of work, although you should be able to return to most normal, non-vigorous activities immediately. You will be prescribed narcotic pain medication to help ease your discomfort. Heavy lifting is limited, as are vigorous work-outs for the first few weeks.
Stitches are removed after about 7-10 days. A supportive type of snug sports bra will be worn for approximately several weeks following your surgery. You may resume all regular activities 4-6 weeks after surgery. Incision lines generally fade over 8-12 months and become less noticeable during that time.
Results of your breast lift will continue to improve over several months, as the breast shape and position settle, however, substantial weight fluctuation will alter your otherwise lasting result.
